Rules, controls and a useful starting tip
Classic 4×4 rules, with optional Undo and hints. The board starts with two tiles. Slide every tile toward one edge. Two equal values combine, and each tile can merge only once per move. For example, 2, 2, 2, 2 becomes 4, 4, empty, empty before the new tile appears.
Each merge adds its new value to your score: combining two 8s earns 16 points. A changed move adds one tile in an equally likely empty cell: 2 with a 90% chance, or 4 with a 10% chance. A direction that changes nothing adds no tile and no move.
Make a tile labeled 2048 to win. The score alone does not win the game. Choose Keep playing to build larger tiles. A full board with no matching horizontal or vertical neighbors ends the round. Undo can recover a previous position, including after a win or loss.
- Use arrow keys or W, A, S, D while the game is focused, swipe or drag across the board, or press the four direction buttons. Releasing outside the board cancels a swipe. Escape cancels a swipe before closing fullscreen.
- Undo restores one move at a time, up to 100 moves. Restart restores this opening. Both retain the random tile sequence, so replaying the same moves gives the same result. New Game starts a fresh sequence.
- Hint suggests a legal direction using open spaces and merges. It does not play for you, predict new tiles, or guarantee a win.
Try keeping your largest tile near a corner and arranging smaller values toward it. There is no timer. This game does not save progress or send game data anywhere; leaving or reloading starts a fresh game.
