FreeCell - Play Online

Plan every visible card, use four free cells wisely, and build all suits home in this accessible classic FreeCell game.

Distraction-free playUse the whole screen and keep the board in focus.

Preparing a fair deal.

On a narrow screen, swipe the felt sideways. The full-size cards stay readable.

Every card is face up. Activate a movable card or ordered run, then activate a marked free cell, foundation, or tableau column. Arrow keys move focus. Escape cancels a selection or drag.

Rules, scoring, controls, and card art

Standard one-deck rules

  • All 52 cards start face up in eight columns. The first four hold seven cards and the last four hold six.
  • Build tableau columns downward by alternating colour. Any card may fill an empty column.
  • Each free cell holds one exposed card. Foundations build by suit from Ace through King.
  • Foundations are final in this traditional variation. Move all 52 cards home to win.
  • An ordered run may move only when each step could be made with single cards. Capacity is (empty free cells + 1) multiplied by 2 for each usable empty column. An empty destination is not usable working space.

Scoring and fairness

Score is 10 points for every card on a foundation, minus 1 for every committed move, with a minimum of zero. Undo restores the earlier board, move count, and score. Illegal attempts score nothing. New Game uses crypto.getRandomValues, rejection sampling, and unbiased Fisher-Yates. A random deal is not promised to be solvable. Restart restores the exact displayed Deal ID.

Mouse, touch, and keyboard

Drag a card or ordered run onto a target marked DROP. You can also click or tap a source, then choose a marked target. With a card or slot focused, use arrow keys to move around the table and Enter or Space to act. Use Esc to cancel, H for a legal hint, U or Ctrl Z to undo, R to restart, and N for a new deal.

Optional saving uses the versioned key ludoic:freecell:state:v1, stores no personal information, validates every card on restore, and clears malformed data safely. Turn saving off or use Clear saved data at any time. Undo history starts fresh after a reload.

Readable, standard cards

Number cards use conventional pip layouts. Every Jack, Queen, and King uses its own two-way English-pattern court artwork with standard corner indices and suit colours. The compact court-card sprite is embedded in this game, so no image, font, script, or runtime request leaves the page. FreeCell has no face-down cards, so card backs do not appear.

Status and accessibility

Selection, hint, legal drop, rejection, win, and no-move states use words and shapes as well as colour. Controls are at least 40 pixels, cards have full spoken names, and updates are announced. The display follows system light, dark, high-contrast, and reduced-motion settings.

Hint policy

Hint identifies one move that the same rules engine will accept. It prefers a foundation move, a card leaving a free cell, or a move that opens a column. A legal hint is not a promise that the deal can still be solved. When no legal transaction exists, the game says so and offers Undo, Restart, or New Game.
